Article: Un Ferragosto in Sardegna
Un Ferragosto in Sardegna
Our founder’s time in Sardegna was nothing short of swoon-worthy, so we asked her to bring us along—and she delivered. The result is a delicious series of dispatches that transport you straight to the Mediterranean island of Sardegna, while also revealing her love of color, Italy, food, and the art of dolce far niente—all inspirations that inevitably weave their way into the Viani world.
“August marks the start of Ferragosto, an Italian holiday rooted in ancient Roman tradition,” shares our founder, Sofia. “It is almost an obligatory pause in Italy and one that I welcome every single year–especially before the madness of fashion week pours in come September.”
A few Ferragosto highlights.
The Sardinia Connection
“This August marks my sixth summer in Sardinia, on the island’s southern coast near Cagliari. Even after all these years, there’s always something new to discover—a dish I hadn’t tasted before or a hidden beach that quickly becomes a favorite. My time here offers not only the chance to reset and renew, but also to return to the work table with fresh inspiration—whether it’s a striking color combination spotted on a balcony or a texture imagined from a seashell found along the shore.”
La Cucina
“Food is one of my love languages, and every year I look forward to the delicious meals here. Many of these dishes feel like home to me. I’ll share my favorite spots below, but no trip to Sardegna is complete without tasting the red tuna—one of the island’s specialties that is as fresh as can be, from sea to table. A perfect day trip is to Carloforte, a picturesque village on San Pietro island where tuna is the main specialty. Also not to be missed is bottarga, often called the caviar of the Mediterranean, which I love grated over pasta. And of course, pane guttiau: the island’s signature crisp flatbread, irresistible with just olive oil and a sprinkle of salt.”
Le Spiagge
“So many beaches, so little time—Sardegna has Italy’s longest coastline, and in my opinion, the most beautiful. Its turquoise waters are the perfect backdrop for everything from a summer read to a seaside meal. Two of my favorite spots for a dip are Cala Coticcio—known as Tahiti on the island of Caprera—and Porto Rafael in the stunning Costa Smeralda, a destination that draws a chic summer crowd. Each time I’m here, I find myself thinking more clearly, as if the island itself insists on disconnection—and the beauty is that everyone around you seems to be on the same wavelength.”
